WELCOME
Want to host and manage your own Minecraft server? Don't want to pay monthly subscriptions? Got a spare PC? Bored? Well here's the guide for you.

In this guide you'll learn how to install Linux and get multiple types of servers running.
You don't need to be an IT guy, but will need some level of computer knowledge.

This is a collection of information I needed to run a server. I don't claim to be in expert in anything you'll see here, but I'll show you what's worked (easily) for me.

NOTE: If you plan on making your server open to the public, you'll need to take necessary precautions before opening up and giving out a path to your home network. Several STRONG recommendations include: SSH hardening, general OS hardening, logging, automatic OS updates, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention.

All of the security-related guides linked are guidelines - a strong mindset of security is required to host public servers. Take it seriously so your home network isn't compromised.

This guide doesn't (yet) cover securing of the OS, server, setting up firewalls, etc. The guides above are suggested starting points. Please do your own research to secure your network. It's one of many responsibilities of a Minecraft server admin.
